Man About Town,and Very Alone
鈥淣ot if you were the last man on earth!鈥 Plenty of guys have heard that line at some point in their lives, but it鈥檚 unlikely that Will Smith is one.His irresistible charm has been proved, above all,by his ability to attract audiences to bad movies like 鈥淗itch鈥 and 鈥淲ild Wild West,鈥 as well as to better ones like 鈥淎li鈥 and 鈥淭he Pursuit of Happyness.鈥 In spite of its third-act collapse into obviousness and sentimentality,鈥淚 Am Legend鈥 鈥 in which Mr.Smith plays somebody with every reason to believe that he really is the last man on earth 鈥 is among the better ones.
And this star, whose amiability makes him easy to underestimate as an actor, deserves his share of the credit. There are not many performers who can make themselves interesting in isolation, without human supporting players.Tom Hanks did it in 鈥淐ast Away,鈥 with only a volleyball as his buddy, foil and straight man.Mr.Smith has a few more companions, including an expressive German shepherd, some department store mannequins and a high-powered rifle.(There are also some flesh-eating,virus-crazed zombies, about which more in a moment.) But it is the charismatic force of his personality that makes his character鈥檚 radical solitude scary and fascinating,as well as strangely appealing.
In this Mr.Smith is helped, and to some degree upstaged,by the island of Manhattan, which the movie鈥檚 director,Francis Lawrence, has turned into a post-apocalyptic wilderness.Three years after an epidemic has caused the evacuation and quarantine of New York City,Robert Neville (Mr.Smith) is its sole diurnal human resident, and he spends his days roaming its desolate neighborhoods,at once wary and carefree. The streetscapes he wanders through will be familiar to any visitor or resident, but the way Mr.Lawrence and his team of digital-effects artists have distressed and depopulated New York is downright uncanny.Weeds poke up through the streets, which are piled with abandoned cars, and a slow, visible process of decay has set in.
A nightmare,of course, but not without its enchantments. In some ways Neville, dwelling in a highly developed urban space that is also a wilderness, experiences the best of both worlds. From his home base in the elegant Washington Square town house he was lucky enough to own (on a government employee鈥檚 salary) before the big die-off,he makes daylight forays that are like an adventure-tourist fantasy. He does a little deer hunting on Park Avenue and some indoor fishing at the Temple of Dendur, picks fresh corn in Central Park and smacks golf balls across the Hudson from the deck of the aircraft carrier Intrepid.
Mr.Lawrence, who previously directed the hectic, obnoxious 鈥淐onstantine鈥 and many music videos, uses elaborate,computer-assisted means to create simple, striking effects. While 鈥淚 Am Legend,鈥 the latest in a series of film versions of a novel by Richard Matheson, fits comfortably within the conventions of the sci-fi horror genre 鈥 here come those zombies!鈥 it mixes dread and suspense with contemplative, almost pastoral moods. And without taking itself too seriously, the movie, written by Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich, does ponder some pretty deep questions about the collapse and persistence of human civilization.
Neville,a scientist and a soldier, constitutes a civilization of one.His daily routines are at once practical 鈥 he wants to find a cure for the virus that wiped everyone else out,and he needs to be home before sundown 鈥 and spiritual.Under the streets of the city and in its empty buildings are the infected, transformed by the virus into pale,hairless,light-allergic cannibals.鈥淪ocial de-evolution appears to be complete,鈥 Neville observes as he makes notes in his basement lab.And his habits are a way not only of protecting himself from the zombies, but also of maintaining the distinction between them and him.
The zombies, like the rabid dogs that are their companions, nonetheless display rudimentary pack behavior and are even able to set traps and make plans.Once they begin swarming,鈥淚 Am Legend鈥 inevitably loses some of its haunting originality, since they look a lot like the monsters in 8 Days Later鈥 (and its sequel,8 Weeks Later鈥?.They also represent a less compelling application of computer-generated imagery than all those empty avenues and silent buildings.
And in its last section 鈥淚 Am Legend鈥 reverts to generic type, with chases and explosions and a redemptive softening of its bleak premise. The presence of the lovely Brazilian actress Alice Braga does seem promising; if she and Mr.Smith were to reboot the species together,Humanity 2.0 would be quite a bit sexier than the present version,as well as friendlier. But really the movie is best when its hero is on his own,and Mr.Smith, walking in the footsteps of Vincent Price and Charlton Heston, who played earlier versions of the Robert Neville character, outdoes both of them. There is something graceful and effortless about this performance, which not only shows what it might feel like to be the last man on earth, but also demonstrates what it is to be a movie star.

(Sorry for no video version of the review, but I’m currently visiting in Los Angeles) “Aww Hell Naww” are probably the words that will be inscribed on Will Smith’s grave. It’s not only a popular line, but also one that a lot of people think identify and embody who he is an an actor. Look, as EVERYONE around here knows, I hate it when musicians just jump to acting and get handed lead roles… but as you hear about Smith’s life, during Fresh Prince of Bel-Air days and afterwards, he took his acting very seriously, took as much training wherever he could, and slowly started turning himself into a pretty fine actor.
So here comes I am Legend, an apparent hybrid between the book and Omega Man. A movie that has the appearance of a Summer Blockbuster more than a pre-christmas release, which may have been brilliant strategy on the studios part since a popcorn type film like this released when all the serious styled Oscar Contenders are coming out could be very lucrative. But happily there is also a little bit more to Legend than just popcorn… not much… but a little
THE GENERAL IDEA
In the very near future a doctor creates what appears to be a cancer vaccine. I genetically engineered virus that when injected into 10,000 cancer patients, cured every single one of them. The problem is, when you play God, you may find out you’re not as good at as you might think. The virus mutates into a plauge that pretty much wipes out the entire human race, killing the vast majority of the population almost instantly, while leaving some survivors…. but most of those survivors are turned into Vampire/Zombie/Rage Virus type beings who lose their humanity and kill every survivor left uneffected. Will Smith is the last human being in New York, and maybe the world, who is also a military geneticist (what great luck) who works tirelessly to not only survive in this new nightmare world, but also struggles to find a cure for the rest of those who are infected.
THE GOOD
Ok, didn’t think I’d end up saying this… but Will Smith is pretty damn good in this movie. When you think about it, it’s not easy to carry a movie when you’re the only character most of the time. You’re interacting with yourself and a dog…. and that’s it. In that way I am Legend had a sort of “Castaway” feel to it, and while Smith doesn’t quite pull off a Hanks lone performance, he does do it quite well. We see him trying his best to lead something that looks like a normal existence, slowly loosing his sanity a little (there’s a great little scene where he’s trying to think of a way to pick up a mannequin) and yet save the world all at the same time. Lesser actors couldn’t have pulled that off, and Smith did, so kudos to him.
Many people around the websphere are maligning the visual effects in the film… and I’d like to know what they’re comapring it to, because I’ll tell you right now, they did as good of a job as I’ve ever seen making human beings in full lead 3D animation interacting with a real environments. It’s easier to make giant robots, or alien creatures because our brains have no point of reference for such things to compare them too… but do a human… or an animal… and it’s a much difference story. The technology is still far from perfect, but the artists who did the VFX in this film did a fantastic job filling out a VERY TALL ORDER.
I love it when a movie can give you that “Oh crap… this guy is totally screwed” feeling, and I Am Legend did that on a couple of solid occasions. Not only screwed because of his general predicament (being the only human left alive with all those infected out there wanting to rip his delicious neck meat out) but also some pretty suspenseful action sequences that had you on the edge of your seat a little.
Oh, and this is a minor thing… but near the beginning of the movie as Will Smith is walking around the now empty downtown New York, there is a giant billboard in Time Square advertising a Batman VS. Superman movie. Made me smile friends… made me smile.
THE BAD
This one killed me. Will Smith is keeping careful detailed notes and memos as any good scientist would do. He even makes this video entry into this computer about how he noticed one of the infected guys stuck his head into the light for a second, which was unnatural behavior for them. However, in another scene, one of the infected (minor spoiler) sets an elaborate booby-trap for Smith to fall into. These are supposed to be mindless rage machines… and they this one shows complex reasoning and planning… and Smith never mentions it again in the movie… ever. I know that’s a minor point… but it really stuck out.
As good of a job that Smith did in keeping my attention even though it’s usually just him on the screen, the fact of the matter is I had a very hard time buying Will Smith as the world’s leading military geneticist who the US government (when it was still around) is relying on to save the world (he’s even on the cover of Time Magazine). And it’s not because I can’t by SMITH per se… but I couldn’t buy it when held up to all the other characteristics of the character he plays. Warrior, bodybuilder (crap… he’s in better shape in this movie than he was in Ali) and everything in between… made it a huge stretch to ALSO buy him a genius scientist.
Once the infected people are revealed, the film lost a bit of it’s soul. I was really enjoying the simple survival story of Smith, working to save the world, and yes, the THREAT of the infected… but once the infected come out full force, it felt like the movie dumbed down a little.
OVERALL
I didn’t have much hope for I Am Legend, but I’ve got to say I enjoyed it. Certainly not as good as it could have been, but a decent time at the movies nonetheless. Smith is solid, the premise is good than they move around in this eerily empty world very well. Not half bad action and suspence although it could have been a bit shorter since the film starts to slowly loose your attention after the first hour. Still… not a bad film. Overall I give I Am Legend a 6.5 out of 10

"I am legend" review
I just saw this movie today, the day it opened here. And was deeply, deeply moved.
I've got to start with the scenes of a deserted New York City post-apocalypse. These were so very, very moving; and very, very convincing. The clips in the trailers for the movie were good, but you really have to see the full panoply of close-up shots, distance shots, etc to really appreciate the sheer scale of what this movie is depicting. There's something of On the Beach and Resident Evil and of any number of disaster movies and zombie movies here. But none of them do justice to the New York depicted here. This is a New York City we see large-scale and micro-scale in order to show us the environment in which the main character is acting.
And Will Smith is simply brilliant as the sole survivor, Robert Neville. Will delivers movingly and convincingly on a script that really focuses on giving us a picture of "what it would be like" ... to be the last man on earth, living off the land in NYC. This is the real strength of this movie: there's really not a lot of blood or gore or zombie scenes at all. Yet I was riveted as Robert goes through his "typical days" in NYC. Every moment was full of pathos and full of menace, too. And occasionally we got some relief from Smith's trademark humor that blended seamlessly with the rest of his performance to give us "what it would be like" with a powerful delivery that just leaves me almost breathless.
There's an effective use of flashbacks that partly tell us the story of how we got to where we're at in this grim New York City; and the flashbacks also serve to give us an overwhelming contrast between Life Before and Life After the apocalyptic disaster wiped out the city. Yet use of flashback was sparing, which I found all the more effective.
Cinematography was excellent throughout, the storyline and script are brilliant, the use of a dog, Samantha, as a key actor was perfect to show us both Robert as companion and Robert as lonely, isolated survivor.
I won't give away the ending, but think it was satisfying as far as it goes, but not nearly as appealing, from my angle, as the foregoing material. That brings up my one complaint: the title. By the end of the movie, we have some sense of the meaning of the title. Yet it still seems to me to feel cheesy and really unworthy of the movie.
But that's a minor plaint. If you haven't seen this movie, and would enjoy seeing a really powerful story about a survivor in post-apocalypse New York City, hey, go check out this flick. It's really worth it.
