Planning and health is big news.Consider these recent headlines:"As suburbs grow,so do waistlines" (McKee,2003),"Sprawling suburbs may fuel obesity" (Neergaard,2003),and "Do suburbs make you fat?" (Associated Press,2003).In the past few years,major health research organizations such as the U.S.Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,and the National Institutes of Health have funded research on the links between the built environment and health.Special issues on the topic have appeared in the American Journal of Public Health (September,2003),the American Journal of Health Promotion (September,2003),and the American Journal of Preventive Medicine {An ust.,2002 and February,2005).National conferences have focused on the question of planning and health.This special issue oi xh.t Journal of the American Planning Association aims to bring planning's perspective explicitly to bear on these topics,while continuing the process of building an interdisciplinary research field dedicated to understanding the links between planning and health.
Several persons and organizations deserve thanks for their help with this special issue.JAPA editor David Sawicki and managing editors Amy Helling and Peter Link worked diligently throughout the process of nurturing this issue from idea to print.The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation,through its Active Living Research program,provided funding that allowed publication of additional articles in this issue.The American Planning Association provided three sessions at its 2005 national meeting to give authors an opportunity to present their preliminary work.Referees too numerous to mention here assisted in reviewing the manuscripts.
